More watch time without a new upload

Nearly half a video's first-year views land after month one. Most never get that tail.  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏  ͏

More Watch Time Without A New Upload
vidIQ on how to get more watch time from videos you have already published
Every channel has one - a video that did alright, went quiet, and has not been opened since. You moved on to the next upload, and it kept ticking over without you. The question is whether it was finished, or just left alone.
Month One Is Not The Whole Story
A video's opening weekend feels like the verdict, and for most channels it is the only weekend anyone looks. We pulled the first-year view curve for 33.7 million long-form videos as they crossed their first year. A quarter of that year lands on day one.

44.8% arrives after month one. For the median video, 6.8%. The long tail is real, and most videos never get one.
None of that is automatic. Nothing in the curve says an old video will get a second run, and most of them do not. The job is picking the one that could.

Find The One That Deserves A Second Chance
Not every upload is worth reopening. Look for the one where people stayed once they arrived, but not many arrived. That is a packaging problem, and it is the cheap kind to fix.
Change The Cheapest Thing
Swap the thumbnail and title, and let YouTube run the test. On a video you published last year, a new thumbnail is the whole cost.
Then make sure it points somewhere. End screens and playlists are what turn one view into a session.
