How LegalEagle edits the first 30 seconds

Why You Don't Own Your Audience

LegalEagle has nearly 4 million subscribers, and its creator, Devin Stone, says on our podcast that he still doesn't have an audience.
By his estimate, two LegalEagle videos share only 25 to 30% of their viewers.
Your Viewers Change With Every Video
With that little overlap, each upload has to find most of its viewers on its own. Devin starts with the idea, asking whether his team would want to see it "if we weren't making it". Then come the first 30 seconds, which he says are "as important as the title and thumbnail."
Where His Team Spends The Hours
Take a 10-hour edit, a number Devin calls "a far underestimation."

4 to 5 hours on the first 30 to 60 seconds

The rest of the video
He puts the hours there because people "hover over the video and they'll autoplay the first few seconds, usually with no sound." Devin does it all the time, "to see if the video actually is delivering on the promise that the packaging represents." His openings rarely start on just his face, and when they do, "there's going to be stuff happening to me on screen."
Try It On Your Next Upload
Play your first 30 seconds with the sound off. Do they deliver what your title and thumbnail promise, even to someone who has never seen your channel? If not, that's where your next editing hour goes. And if it's the title that's off, vidIQ's free AI Title Generator ranks title ideas by score, using real YouTube search data.

Devin waited at least six months to make his first reaction video, worried it would dilute his audience of law students. Its first week brought about 5,000 views, the same as his other uploads.
